Gearing up for Twilight 2024

For one weekend a year, thousands of people line the streets of downtown Athens at dusk, ready to cheer on hundreds of cyclists as they whiz by, rounding tight corners. The energy is electric and the bars and restaurants are packed. Known as the Athens Twilight Criterium, this race weekend is one of Athens’ best! Hosted by Athens Orthopedic Clinic, this annual event is more than just a world class bike race. It’s a uniquely Athens weekend, where downtown comes alive with families and visitors who come to cheer on cyclists and also to enjoy the music, art and food scene that downtown Athens offers.

This year, the event will occur on April 26 & 27. The 2 day event offers a multitude of activities including kids’ fun runs and a kid festival, a 5k foot race sponsored by Fleet Feet, a 50k or 100k gambler bike race, a mountain biking timed trial, and of course, a host of Athens finest art, music, and food! The main event occurs Saturday night when professional racers from around the world bring their energy to Athens to compete in the much anticipated criterium race. The pro women’s 40K race starts at 7:30 p.m. and the men’s 80K at 8:30 p.m.

It’s truly a sight to behold. The energy of Athens radiates from each fan lining the streets. The  sweaty cyclists race laps around downtown, while local businesses brim with people and festivities. Whether you’re interested in the live music, the art scene, the cycling, or just a good time with friends, you won’t want to miss Athens Twilight Criterium. For more info, go to athenstwilight.com.
