Many More Wins to Come for the Flag Football Team!

t’s the second season for the flag football team. They won their first game of the season against East Jackson on October 26. It also happened to be the team’s first ever win at Slaughter Field. Hopefully, they can look forward to many more wins as the season progresses.

The new season brings with it a new coach. This is Coach Alan Weiler’s first year coaching the flag football team at Athens Academy, although he coached when he was in college. Weiler says, “My favorite part is getting to know the students and helping them to grow in this really great game.” Weiler also says that the team has been improving rapidly since practices started in late September, despite only practicing twice a week.

The team is young, without any seniors, and everyone comes together to support one another. They have good communication, which was a key part in their recent victory, along with their ability to find gaps in the defense. Of course, there are always things for them to work on, such as running routes and defense. However, the team is able to focus during practice and absorb information from their coaches, so they will continue to get better.

The next home game for the flag football team is on Thursday, November 16. Students and teachers are encouraged to come out and support what will hopefully be another win for this historic team.
