Every year, from October until February, members of Athens Academy’s mock trial team meet on campus every Wednesday and Sunday to prepare their case for competition.
The Mock trial team consists of a Plaintiff and Defense team, both of which contain 3 attorneys and 3 witnesses, totaling 12 starters. This year, the team will compete at the UGA Law School on February 1st for region, and if they place top 3, they move on to the district competition.
Will McCleary, a defense attorney, noted that, “Placing 5th last year was a gut punch, so we have been ready to come back and get revenge this year. I’ve pinned a picture of the 1st place trophy on my wall to remind me every morning of what our goal is.” Will and his defense team have been preparing to defend Casey Farnsworth in the case.
Renee Cargill, who plays the plaintiff, Jordan Dillard, in the case, said, “Mock trial is a lot of hard work and it’s always fun to see it pay off at the competition. We are all excited to get out there and compete.”
No matter how the season ends though, the Mock Trial team is impressive for their dedication and attention to detail.
Update! –
The mock trial team came home with an unfortunate 4th place finish, one away from moving on. Although this is not the result they were hoping for, their dedication and time spent working on their defense is admirable.
