January 12th was Athens Academy Night at the Rock Lobsters Game, featuring successes all around the rink!
The newly constructed Akins Ford Arena is a beautiful facility of the perfect size for spectating sports and all seats have a great view of the rink. The Rock Lobsters, Athens’ new professional hockey team in their inaugural season, is named after the famous song by Athens band “The B-52s.” Not only did they win 7-4 on ACAD night but over 240 tickets were sold through our school event.
Another special spotlight is that Athens Academy’s own Oswaldo Rivera opened the night by singing the National Anthem. The crowd of Spartans, Athenians, and hockey fans erupted into cheers and applause upon hearing him singing the final note.
Rivera, a senior, says, “It was definitely nerve-racking just because I had never performed in front of such a big crowd; it definitely took a lot of extra preparation, but it was worth it and I really enjoyed it. Hopefully, I can do it again soon.”
Between the Spartan-sung Star Spangled Banner and the Rock Lobsters’ dominating win, ACAD night was a success! If you haven’t been able to catch a hockey game yet, the season’s not over! Check out their schedule to figure out when you can see the Rock Lobsters in action on ice.
