Some people have the preconceived notion that board games are boring. Just because the word “board” sounds like “boring” does not mean that this is necessarily true. Find the right games, and maybe the right people, and get ready for a tornado of scheming, cheating, and screaming. Here are my top board games to play as we gear in for the holiday season.
- Catan: This is a resource, trading, settling board game that’s perfect for a group of four. Build roads, settlements, and cities as you conquer Catan but be aware of the robber when you can: it’ll prevent you from getting the resources you need. And here’s a tip: six and eight are your best friends.
- Ticket to Ride: Create train routes across countries and continents. All you have to do is get from one place to another. However, keep your cards close to your chest. Don’t let the players know where you’re going or else next thing you know you’ll have to reroute and that’s just a pain. Tip: keep the rainbow cards on deck.
- Now for the real deal- Monopoly: Yes, this game is long. And yes, this game can be frustrating. But there is nothing more pleasing than draining fake, paper money and properties from the other players (if you’re winning, of course). Be aware, however, of the hands of the greedy players because you never know who will just snatch some money right out of that bank. Also, be sensitive to the younger players because one rent to be paid and that board will be flipped (speaking from experience).
Overall, any of these games and more that your family enjoys will result in laughter and competition that I think is healthy for the family. Spend time away from screens and recharge to get ready for the New Year. Not to mention they will reveal everyone’s true colors…
