Have you ever imagined what it would be like to swim alongside the fish on the ocean floor? Or see an octopus poke its head out of a hole looking for food? Maybe you just want to know what it feels like to float along in the ocean observing everything all at once. Well, I have the perfect opportunity for you.
The Scuba Club at Athens Academy, led by Wes O’Neill, Luke De La Fuenta, and I, is a new addition to the 2024 club list. Us, along with Bob Sears, our wonderful faculty member, have started this club with the hope of helping more people to have the opportunity to explore the ocean.
Not only does this club give you a perspective into a life that is completely separate to our world, but it can also help to grow your horizons and understanding of our precious Earth. Partnering with Athens Scuba, we have gotten a handful of people certified already, and hope to get many more interested students and possibly faculty certified.
There are many fun trips that are available throughout the year such as the pumpkin carving contest in Lake Jocassee as well as diving at the Georgia Aquarium on February 9th. Have you ever met someone who has carved a pumpkin at the bottom of a lake? Well, now you have.
This new club is planning on continuing for many years in the future. Our hope in beginning the Scuba Club is helping to create a community, not just within our school but within Athens. We hope that it is a new opportunity where people can really push their boundaries and learn something new. Scuba diving is an amazing experience, and if you would like to try it, the Scuba Club is a way to make that possible.
