The Spartan Cross Country Team is gearing up for championship season with Region on October 24th, followed by sectionals and the state championship in the following two weeks. Both the Girls and Boys teams had great races this past weekend against some really tough competition including Westminster, South Forsyth, and Oconee County High School.
The guys’ team had a few standout performers including freshman Adrian Harding who broke 18 for the first time running 17:59, as well as Henry Scruggs who had a big PR, running in the low 18’s. On the girls’ team, Maya Davis had another lights out performance winning the race with a time of 18:39, destroying the competition by 45 seconds. Maya’s sister, Audrey also had a great race running in the low 21’s.
As the Spartans gear up for the region meet this Thursday, both teams are sitting in a good position to come out with a trophy despite facing some serious competition. The boys will have to face up against the reigning 2A State Champion, Providence Christian Academy as well as Barrow Arts and Science Academy, who have produced some really fast times this season. With the girls team’s dominant performances during the regular season, their race isn’t as close. However, they will still have to get past Barrow Arts and Science Academy and Banks County, whose top runner just got into the 19’s. Coach Geoffrey Walton is looking forward to the meets saying, “both the boys and girls have been training really hard, and I’m looking forward to seeing them show that during championship season.”
Looking at the State Championship, the Girls Cross Country team is currently seeded 2nd behind the Wesleyan School, with Lovett seeded one point behind them. The hunt for the trophy will really only be between these 3 teams, all within 15 points of each other in the projections. The Boys team is definitely going to be an underdog in their competition, currently seeded 8th. However, they are looking for some big races that can push them into a podium position. Sophomore Sumit Alexander says he thinks “we can cause some chaos in the championship, if we have some good races.” As the Spartans get ready to run, we wish them the best of luck!
