On October 4th, Athens Academy hosted the 2024 National Honor Society induction and introduced 57 new members into the prestigious organization. John Vereecken, president of Maxwell Leadership Spanish, opened the ceremony with the Schacht Lecture. Throughout his 40 years in South and Central America, Vereecken has been in the thick of it everywhere he goes. From the anti-communist protests in Cuba to the rampant Cartel activity in Mexico to the political upheaval in El Salvador, he has worked through major and even dangerous global events to help educate local leaders and promote activism, and spread a strong sense of community.
The National Honor Society is a selective organization with members invited based on their high academic achievements, scholarship, and character. To be inducted,, students must prove that service and community are key factors in their character after attaining a sufficiently high GPA. Once invited into the society, the potential inductees file an application that is then reviewed and hopefully approved by Athens Academy. Current members rank toward the top of their class and are active role models of our school. Furthermore, inductees must be starting their junior year of high school to be considered.
The 2024 NHS Induction signifies several core values of Athens Academy including scholarship, academic excellence, and service. Reaching for the stars, this year’s inductees stood out as top scholars at our school and therefore had the honor of joining the NHS.
