Over the past couple years, Athens Academy has upgraded a lot of its athletic facilities. The Farmer Field House, the new track, and the video board in the Spartan Center, to name a few. In December, the newest addition to the Athens Academy campus, the tennis facility, will be finished.
In the past, the tennis courts have sported a shed that housed the rackets, balls, scoreboards, and more, which was torn down in preparation for construction of the new building. This facility is a huge upgrade, and includes locker rooms for both the guys and girls teams along with a coaches office and more. Tennis coach Bo Hodge said, “This facility is going to be a game changer for Athens Academy Tennis. It’s going to allow us to host tournaments that benefit not only our student athletes, but our whole community.”
The implications for the tennis team are huge. Senior Avery Roark noted, “I am excited to finally have our own tennis space! Every other team had designated locker room space, and that’s something we haven’t had in the past, so I’m excited for us to finally have that space for our team. I think it’ll bring us closer.”
There couldn’t have been a better year to build it, as both Spartan teams finished last season strong. The girls won the Region, and the boys were runners-up in the GHSA State Playoffs. Hopefully this new facility will give both teams the extra edge they need to have great seasons this year in the new 1A-3A Private State Playoffs!
