Oconee Youth School of Performance is a dance company and playhouse located in Watkinsville, Georgia. OYSP puts on a few musicals each year and is home to dancers who compete multiple times each spring.
The most recent musical performed by OYSP was “Elf,” in December of 2023, and the next show will be “Godspell.” This musical is comprised of a small, but extremely talented cast. It will be performed on Saturday, April 13th, at 7 pm, and on Sunday, April 14th, at 2 pm and 7 pm.
Oswaldo Jara Rivera is a junior at Athens Academy and plans on attending the show who is looking forward to the show. Rivera said, “I am most looking forward to seeing my friends perform and seeing how they use the stage that was created specifically for ‘Godspell.’”
The OYSP dancers have competed in two competitions so far: “Access Broadway” and “Rainbow National Dance Competition.” They have been successful in both, taking home several titles and awards.
These dancers will compete in two more competitions at the Classic Center in downtown Athens. The first is “Star Systems” on April 19th, and the second is “Bravo,” which will take place the first weekend of May.
Brinkley Williams, a junior at Athens Academy and a dancer in the senior company at OYSP, said, “Getting to dance with my best friends and attend competitions is my favorite part of going to OYSP.”
In addition to competitions, the dancers and members of the musical theater company will perform in multiple showcases at OYSP from April 9th to the 12th. These shows display all the hard work and dedication these performers have put into their art since last summer.
