As the region tournament came to an end, the Athens Academy varsity boy’s basketball team was able to win its first region title in 24 years. They faced up against Union County in Blairsville, Georgia where they defeated them 63-61 due to a clutch last-second layup by senior, and All-region honorable mention nominee, Westbrook Adams.
When asked about his layup, Westbrook said, “I was just thinking don’t do anything stupid, and then I had the layup and was thinking please make this.”
Now, the Spartans are looking to make a deep run into the state playoffs. Senior Isaac Rorey is looking for more big wins, saying, “I think we have a great shot at going all the way. We are playing our best basketball right now.” After finishing the region season with a 21-5 record and winning the region championship, there is no better time than now to win state.
Don Hurlburt, Head Coach of the Spartans urges his team to keep playing hard. He reminds them, “One more!” With the prodding of their coach, the Spartans must focus on winning one game at a time.
Everyone in the stands eagerly awaits more wins. Devoted fan Tom Hollingsworth says, “I cannot wait for the game this week. I told my teachers I wouldn’t be participating in class this week to help save my voice for the game, but everybody else needs to remember to stay loud throughout the game.”
The Spartans faced Toombs County High School, in the elite eight on February 28th. Like Tom said, come out, be loud, and Go Spartans!
