The sixth graders have 2nd grade buddies! I interviewed Bennett Marti and Dylan Jones, both second graders, and their buddies: Brooks Sams, Harry Rows, and Evelyn Berry.
One of the first activities that happened was when the sixth graders wrote a letter to their buddy about what they did over the weekend. Marti said that it was cool seeing what his buddies did, and he liked the part about one of them being on an island. Marti says, “I’m excited to meet my buddies and think that it will be fun to hang out with them.”
Rows, Marti’s buddy, enjoys being a buddy. He says that it is fun seeing how similar the second graders are to him. He feels so old when they are so tiny compared to him. When considering his role model status, he says, “It is tough but a part of growing up and being more responsible.” Rows is excited to create a special story for Marti.
Sams, Marti’s other buddy, enjoys getting to know Marti and how cool he is. He likes how the second graders can have a full conversation compared to the kindergarten buddy he had last year. Sams is excited to hang out with Marti at the playground. To Sams, it feels like Marti is one of his friends. He feels it is his responsibility to make sure Marti doesn’t get hurt on the playground when they are playing.
Berry and Jones met each other twice this year. Usually, the sixth grade buddies go to the second grade and talk to their buddies. One of Berry’s favorite parts is playing on the playground. Jones is faster and more flexible than her which she finds funny.
“It is a special time to hang out with your buddies and learn about them,” Jones says. Throughout the year they will meet once a month. This leaves time to do a lot of different things. Berry hopes that at some point the second graders will get to come up to the sixth grade. She hope to show Jones her space. Jones hopes to show off her talents in arts and crafts with Berry.
Everyone is excited for their next buddy day on November 10.
