Interim Week is one of the influential events that take place at Athens Academy. Throughout the week, each Upper School grade has the week off with their own unique schedule. Freshmen do a variety of fun outdoor activities with their friends and teachers, and sophomores take bus rides to wildlife areas and some college visits in Atlanta.
This was not always the case. Interim week used to be only offered to juniors and seniors. Meanwhile, freshmen and sophomores stuck to their regular schedules at school. Mr. Olson confirms, “Interim week was only meant for [juniors]. Seniors had their own activities while sophomores and freshmen had to stay in class.”
Many former underclassmen missed out on the joy of Interim Week. Dr. Barrow agrees with the change, stating, “I am happy with the timing of interim week, and I just had an awesome time with the sophomores last week.”
Students also appreciate this alteration. “It was a meaningful addition. I think interim week should be an experience that should be shared as a high school together,” Luke De La Fuente says.
As a former underclassman, Joshua Xie declares, “Freshman and sophomore interim week gave me an opportunity to take a break from school and bond with my classmates outside of class, especially new ones.”
The decision of integrating Interim Week with the underclassmen was a great decision, and it would be appalling for them to be in classes while juniors and seniors take part in their own activities.
